Name Change

Merchants Barn B&B's previous Host, John Christmas, occupied Merchants Barn for over 40 years and he sends his regards to guests that came here and he refers to as friends.   As our name was similar to our neibhour we agreed to change and are pleased to take on the name of Anchorage BandB.  The definition of Anchorage being an area on the coast or harbour that is a suitable, secure and safe place to stay.

Dog Friendly and Dido's Guidelines

We are dog friendly and even dogs described as neurotic have felt relaxed and at home.

Dido's guidelines below are based on advise and feedback from our guests and Dido so that the dogs, their owners and non dog people enjoy their stay at Anchorage BandB.

  • Dogs coming to the Anchorage BandB must be clean, well groomed, friendly towards Dido, other dogs and people
  • Please bring their bed and something for them to lounge about on so that any residue marsh mud does not end up on the carpet.
  • There is a hose pipe, bathing bowl and plenty of towels for cleaning and a porch for drying before entering the house
  • The porch is to be used for dog meals, dirty paws, boots, gear, grooming activities and as a waiting room while they dry off or you have your breakfast and they are never left alone in the room.  If all guests agree they can stay under the table during breakfast on a short lead and not in any of the areas that chef/guests needs to walk through.
  • No food is allowed in the rooms, yours or theirs and not even bones - thank Dido for that one.  Also please avoid leaving any wet dog food anywhere as it goes smelly really quick.
  • They promise to be well behaved (or you can manage their behaviour), clean and dry their paws and belly before they come in, be on a lead and do not jump on the bed or furniture.  A jar of goodies is available where extra persuasion is needed - for the dog, not the owners.
  • Charges will be made for damages or extra cleaning.
  • Sorry we can only accept dogs and their owners that are happy with these guidelines and your feedback or queries on any of these points welcomed.

Parking

Opposite the house we are privilaged to have parking for 2 small to medium size cars shared between 3 rooms.  For larger cars there is parking on Freeman Street or the public car park is only a minute away, currently £5 per day and free between 1800 and 0800 hours.

At some point during 2016 we will be refurbishing our parking area, so parking will not be available at that time.  There are a number of on street parking places that can be found.

Please do not park in Merchants House which is a different Bed and Breakfast.

We are arranging to hire out our bikes which include a dutch ladies bike in duck egg blue, a number of road bikes and a tandem.

Please ask at the time of booking.

Please do not go to Merchants House which is a different B&B.

Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells is in the center of the North Norfolk coast with a unique mixture of sandy beaches, salt marshes, pinewoods and sand dunes.  Wells has a small harbour, a large sandy beach surrounded by pinewoods, and thus caters for most tastes and weathers.  In summer the extensive beach and sand dunes are popular with families.  The harbour is home to a small fishing fleet, but in summer is busy with a range of vessels from kayaks to sea going cruisers with several hundred moorings, some vessels mooring here all year round and a pontoon, often mooring visiting boats 3 deep during summer) that is currently being extended Northwards.  In winter the salt marshes are home to very large numbers of geese and visiting waders.  The house is situated about 200m from the quay in a quiet, small road known locally as a Yard.

Walkers and Cyclists

Wells next the Sea is popular with walkers as it is right on the middle of the North Norfolk Coastal Path and on the Peddars Way.  The Anchorage BandB provides an ideal resting place as it is a few yards from the Path.  There is a secure place for your bikes and a convenient porch to leave your boots and gear.

For those walking or cycling the North Norfolk Path or Peddars Way Wells is right in the middle and an ideal base with plenty of restaurants and shops available all year round (and saves you lugging all of your luggage around and packing/unpacking each day).  The coast hopper is a great reliable bus service to use as transport to and from your start and finish points each day.

We have had a number of guests stay with us for 2 or 3 days and we have helped them to plan their routes to make the most of their stay and see as much of the North Norfolk coastal path and this beautiful coastline as possible.

Birders

Wells is also popular with birders, situated between the RSPB reserve at Titchwell and the NWT reserve at Salthouse.  There are also reserves at Snettisham and Welney, within easy traveling distance.  Plenty of bird books and local knowledge is available to help with identifying wildlife spotted.
